Team Sustainability Benefits Evaluation

To make progress with sustainability, every organisation needs to be aligned about what matters to them about it.

Regardless of any public commitments made, a lack of alignment leads to:

  • Confusion, a lack of consistent motivation and enormous potential for waste.
  • Limited buy-in and embedding of sustainability’s underlying principles.
  • Potential suspicions of “green-washing” and box-ticking.

But most organisations have no idea if their employees are on the same page when it comes to what matters about sustainability.

And, in most cases, they aren’t.

I found the Sustainability Benefits Evaluation highly thought-provoking and illuminating, and think it will greatly help address the challenges we face with sustainability.

If you’ve already completed the Individual Sustainability Benefits Evaluation, you will be familiar with how a benefits-based approach:

  • Introduces a new way of thinking about what matters with sustainability.
  • Indicates what might motivate your organisation.
  • Provides a new lens through which to view existing sustainability activities and potential new ones.

The Team Sustainability Benefits Evaluation extends these things to a group of people in your organisation with responsibility, involvement, insight and motivation when it comes to sustainability.

Get your organisation talking in the same way and about the same things when it comes to sustainability

Engaging and involving employees, rather than imposing an understanding and commitment upon them, which typically leads to indifference at best and resentment at worst.

Dedicate attention and resources on those areas and activities that will simultaneously maximise your sustainability impact and your own interests.

See where there are choices between sustainability goals and between sustainability and other organisational goals, to make informed decisions.

Ensure that those with a passion in particular areas are identified and can take the lead, with a sense of which individuals and teams are best-placed to pursue particular goals.

Uncover and resolve different ideas within your organisation of why sustainability might matter to you and what it might look like – differences that would otherwise remain hidden, creating waste and reducing impact.

Raise the bar of sustainability both within your own organisation and as part of the general sustainability effort.

But more than anything, it helps you answer the critical question of how aligned you are about why you’re engaging with sustainability, which in turns shapes what you do:

  • You may find you’re in the minority of organisations that is already highly aligned: progress with enhanced clarity and confidence.
  • More likely, you’ll be one of the vast majority of organisations with big areas of divergence: explore and understand them, to then work towards consensus.

In all cases, understanding what motivates your sustainability activity will ground and embed it in organisational reality, focus priorities and resources, minimise waste and maximise impact.

The core content of the Team Sustainability Benefits Evaluation is the same as the Individual Sustainability Benefits Evaluation, but because the purpose is very different.

  • The value you can derive as an organisation is exponentially more.
  • The output – the Team Report – has many more dimensions and far greater detail.
  • The process necessarily requires a bit more input from you, as we’ll now explain.

Authentic Sustainability
that is truly
“sustainable”

how it works and what you’ll get

1

you tell us who to invite and when, and who we should send the Team Report to

Immediately after purchase, we direct you (or someone you delegate) to a web page to specify who you want to take part (up to 15 people). For the richest and most nuanced picture possible, try and include a cross-section of people involved with sustainability – people tasked with it, with influence over it, affected by it, or simply passionate about it.

You also tell us when the evaluation should start and end, and who should receive the final Team Report.

Information required from you:

The name and email address of the person who will brief team members, receive progress updates, and be sent the final Team Report.

Who the evaluation is for and of (normally your organisation, but could be a particular team or project), and when the evaluation will start and finish.

We need a name and email address so that we can send each team member a unique and secure link to their response.

2

we set up your evaluation and send out invitations

On your chosen start date, invitations are automatically sent out to your team members on your chosen start date. The invitations contain a link to the evaluation, and tell team members who has invited them and the deadline they need to respond by.

Unique Link Sent to Each Respondent
3

team members complete and submit their evaluations

Each team member follows a unique link to access, input, save and submit their evaluation response. They are asked to what extent each sustainability benefit matters to your organisation, and to comment on specifically why and how. Upon completion, each team member is given a PDF report of their individual response to download, print or share – useful in its own right, and to later compare with the Team Report.

Submitting a Response
4

we send reminders and update your administrator on participation status

Throughout the process, we send automated reminders to any team members who have not yet responded. We also update your nominated administrator as responses come in, including a summary of how many are still yet to be completed (which can be useful to ‘nudge’ respondents offline).

Email Reminders
5

we compile the Team Report and send it to your administrator

When all team members complete their evaluations or the deadline is reached, the Team Report PDF is compiled and sent to your administrator. This collates and analyses all inputs, summarises key takeaways, and highlights areas of agreement or divergence amongst your team. We recommend it is shared with all team members: this demonstrates transparency, shares learning and allows them to compare their individual perspectives with the emerging overall one.
